Death counter for OBS and Twitch: via chat command, phone and Stream Deck
At the end your overlay counts deaths (or anything else), and you or your mods raise the count with a chat command like !deaths, on a phone or with a Stream Deck key.
What you need
- An overlay that already runs as a browser source in OBS (see the guide “Add an overlay to OBS”)
- Riglayer is connected to your Twitch account (this happens when you sign in)
The steps
-
Create a counter in the overlay
Open your overlay in the editor, click “+ Add element” and choose “Score” in the “Timers & counters” group. In the element card enter a name such as “Deaths” under “Name” and set label, font and color. The name matters because the chat command finds the counter by it.
- Ready-made: the “Gaming basics” template already comes with a death counter.
- Besides the score, hearts, a progress bar without a Twitch source and every entry of a multi-score also work.
-
Create a chat command
Open the “Chat commands” page (“Twitch” group) and click “New command”. Enter the command without the exclamation mark, for example “deaths”, and choose your counter, for example “Deaths”.
- “Who may use the command?”: channel owner only, moderators (default), VIPs and mods, subs, VIPs and mods, or everyone. The channel owner always may.
- “Allow numbers in the command”: with “Yes”, +3, -2, set 10 and reset also work; with “No” every call changes the counter by exactly one step.
- “Cooldown between uses” prevents double clicks in chat (default 2 seconds).
- “Reply in chat” is optional, for example “{name} is now at {wert}”.
-
Use it in chat
From now on Riglayer reacts to the command in your chat:
- !deaths raises it by one step
- !deaths +3 or !deaths -2 changes it by that value
- !deaths set 10 sets the count
- !deaths reset resets it (the last three only with “Allow numbers”)
-
Control it from your phone or computer
On the “Controls” page all counters appear as tiles with big plus and minus buttons, also on a phone. The page can be installed as an app. On a computer you can use the “Hotkeys” switch there to assign keys to actions.
-
Control it with Stream Deck
On the “Controls” page click “Stream Deck” and create an access. Riglayer shows you ready-made links for every action, for example plus, minus or reset for your death counter. In the Stream Deck software put the “Website” action (“System” folder) on a key, paste the link and enable the option that calls the page in the background so no browser window opens.
- The links are secret; anyone who has them can trigger these actions.
- This works the same way with other devices and programs that can call a web link.
Tips and common problems
- Simultaneous clicks from chat, phone and Stream Deck are not lost: Riglayer applies every change on the server one after another.
- In a text element you can show the count with a variable like {zähler:Deaths} (the variable keeps its German name).
- If the command on the “Chat commands” page shows “Counter not found”, the name in the overlay does not match the chosen counter.
