Frequently asked questions about Riglayer
Cost, access, OBS setup, Twitch permissions and privacy: here are the answers to the questions we get most often. If something is missing, write to the address in the legal notice.
What is Riglayer?
Riglayer is an overlay editor for OBS and Twitch that runs in your browser. You place text, images, counters, timers, chat, alerts, quizzes and tournament brackets on a canvas and add your overlay's address to OBS as a browser source. Changes appear live in OBS. You don't need to install anything for the editor.
Is Riglayer free?
Yes. Riglayer costs nothing, contains no ads and has no payment features; none are planned either. It is a private project that is not run for profit.
How do I get access?
You sign in with your Twitch account. An admin then reviews your channel and approves it. Riglayer can notify you by email about approval or rejection; you can turn these emails off in the settings. Signing in with Twitch is the only way to create an account.
How do I add an overlay to OBS?
Create an overlay in Riglayer and copy its link. In OBS, add a “Browser” source under Sources, enter the link as the URL and set width and height to the overlay's size, usually 1920 × 1080. After that, all changes from the editor appear in OBS without reloading the source.
Do I need a plugin or a program?
No. The editor runs in your browser and the overlay is a normal browser source in OBS. Only for OBS control (switching scenes, muting audio, starting stream and recording) do you turn on OBS's built-in WebSocket server; no additional software is needed.
What is the difference between “Real time” and “Only after saving”?
In “Real time” mode OBS shows every change immediately. In “Only after saving” mode OBS shows only the last saved version while you rebuild in the editor; the new version only goes live with “Save” (Ctrl+S). Counters, timers, videos and sounds stay controllable immediately in both modes. You set the mode for each overlay individually.
Which alerts are there?
Riglayer shows follows, subs, resubs, gift subs, bits, channel point redemptions, raids and hype trains. Each event has its own texts, an optional image or GIF, a sound and a minimum amount. A queue can be paused, skipped and cleared.
Can I control counters like a death counter via chat, phone or Stream Deck?
Yes. Chat commands like !deaths, !deaths +3 or !deaths set 10 change a counter; you decide who may use them. The “Controls” page has big buttons for your phone and can be installed as an app. For Stream Deck and similar devices Riglayer creates ready-made links for every action.
Which Twitch permissions does Riglayer need and why?
When you sign in, Riglayer requests the permissions needed for the Twitch features: manage channel, read and write chat, read followers, subscribers, bits and channel points, run polls and predictions, create clips, read moderation data, and your verified email address for status emails. Twitch shows you the full list beforehand. For your own channel Riglayer uses them only after approval. You can disconnect at any time at twitch.tv/settings/connections.
What happens to my data?
Riglayer stores what is needed to operate the service: your Twitch profile, the Twitch tokens (encrypted), your email address and the content you create. There is no tracking, no advertising and no analytics services; cookies are only used for your sign-in and, if you choose the language yourself, for that choice. In the settings you can export your data and delete your account. Details are in the privacy policy.
Can my team help out?
Yes. You invite helpers via a link and give them roles with individually selectable rights, for example only operating counters or editing overlays. Twitch moderators and editors of your channel can automatically get a role you choose. The log shows who changed what.
How much can I create?
Per channel up to 25 overlays with up to 300 elements each, 30 logo rotations, 30 alerts, 30 quizzes and 30 tournaments, plus up to 300 images and sounds. These limits protect the server from overload and apply to everyone equally.
Can I back up my overlays or move them to another channel?
Yes. Every overlay can be exported as a file (.riglayer.json), including images, alerts and logo rotations, and imported again in any channel. Riglayer also creates versions automatically, from which you can restore an earlier state.
Does Riglayer work with Streamlabs or other streaming software?
Riglayer is built for OBS Studio. Any program that can show a web page as a source can in theory load the overlay address; we have not tested this. OBS control only works with OBS.
How do I delete my account?
Under Settings you will find “Delete account”. This deletes your account, your channel with all its content and your Twitch tokens, and the connection at Twitch is revoked. Before that you can download all your data as a file.
Is Riglayer affiliated with Twitch or OBS?
No. Riglayer is an independent project and has no connection to Twitch, Amazon, the OBS Project, YouTube or Discord. The names mentioned are trademarks of their respective owners.
